Celebrity culture has always been a massive influence on fashion. From the silhouette dress to the tote bag, every season, women look to female celebrities for advice about what to wear in the coming season.

Amongst the most emulated women is Cheryl Cole. From her humble beginnings as a non-assuming Geordie lass, Cheryl Cole has gripped the nation with her perfect hair and impeccable dress sense.

Here’s how to do it yourself:

Hair

Pre-bonded hair extensions are a fantastic, inexpensive way to get beautiful, full hair like Cheryl. Use curling tongs to get a lightly tussled look during the day time, going for a sophisticated up do during the evening

Make Up

Cheryl Cole is renowned for her smoky eyes and radiant skin. To get a similar look, use a mineral based foundation such as Bellapierre Compact and fill your eyebrows with a brown shadow before applying shadow to your eyes. A colour palate like Bobbi Brown’s “Deluxe Palate” is fantastic to get the right effects. Finish the eyes by applying liquid eyeliner and then apply kohl.

For your base, use a radiating moisturiser to give your skin a luminescent glow.

Top Shop T-shirts

Casual Wear

Cheryl Cole does casual amazingly well, managing to carry off the simplest of outfits with an amazing touch of glamour. Quiz, USC, Topshop and Projects are all great places to go when looking for a top, but most high street stores will be able to give you the look for less. High Street fashion has gotten much, much better over the last few years. Skinny jeans are a must, as are high waisted bootcut jeans.

Cheryl Cole’s style changes constantly, so it’s always a good idea to keep checking out your high street stores for inspiration. Many people shy away from trying to emulate celebrity style, believing that it will be too expensive to get the quality within a budget they can afford. This just isn’t the case anymore. Check out the following sites for stylish clothes that are affordable as well as gorgeous.

Topshop

Lipsy

Boohoo

Dress from Lipsy VIP range

Evening Wear

During the X-factor shows, Cheryl’s dresses were a hot topic of conversation. Sometimes perfect, sometimes controversial, Cheryl seemed to be able to manage to pull anything else. On the High Street, try Top Shop, House of Fraser and Oasis for sophisticated evening wear or try shopping online at Lipsy and Boohoo

Founded in Denmark in 1904, Georg Jensen has been at the forefront of contemporary design for the last 100 years, their name becoming synonymous with the very best in elegant design. Founded during the developing Art Nouveau movement in the early 20th century, Georg Jensen took inspiration from the new aesthetic sensibility – creating pieces of jewellery which were inspired by natural forms – of plants, flowers and curved lines, and encompassing new ideas of sensuality and pleasure.

Art Nouveau, as a movement, took hold of European society during the start of the 20th century, and the ideas of this new aestheticism can be seen in, not only the art – but the philosophy, architecture, interior design, jewellery design and literature of the period. Art Nouveau was not just a style, for many it was a way of life, and Georg Jensen’s jewellery succeeded in encapsulating this idea, creating pieces that echoed the beauty of nature whilst pertaining a beauty all of their own.

Moving on from the Art Nouveau period, and following the development of the company, Georg Jensen continuously employed designers and silversmiths who were one step ahead in terms of stylistic scope – allowing them to develop ideas and designs but all the time staying true to the philosophy of the company.

Whilst characteristically decadent, Georg Jensen jewellery remains true to its “Scandanavian values – the simplicity of life, the Nordic light, clean water and fresh air” and allows today’s consumer to acquire stunning pieces of contemporary jewellery with a vintage feel. Owning a Georg Jensen piece is like owning a little piece of Art Nouveau culture. What’s more, in terms of luxury jewellery prices, Georg Jensen pieces are quite reasonable, and made from the most exquisite materials.

There are a number of UK stockists of Georg Jensen jewellery such as www.bankslyon.co.uk . When buying, always make sure that you use an authorised dealer, and do not settle for counterfeits!

Many of us, at some point in our lives, end up with more clothes than we know what to do with. Some of us end up holding onto our old outfits, determined that they will fit us again, or that we will find use for it some day, but they needn’t sit there doing nothing. There are a number of things you can do with your old, unwanted or un-wearable clothes.

Get out your sewing machine

If you sew, then you can make all sorts of amazing outfits by altering existing clothes. Find patterns and fabrics that you particularly love and then look for a sewing pattern that you like the look of. After a little bit of work, you could end up with a gorgeous new outfit without having to spend a fortune hitting the shops. You could even think about selling them!

Sell them on

If your clothes are in good condition, or are of a very high quality, then you could sell your unwanted clothes on a site like Ebay. There are step by step guidelines as to how to set up an account on the website, but you should also heed the advice of experienced sellers if you want to get the best price for your clothes. Setting up a secondary account, or having a friend bidding for you is always a good way of pushing up the price of your goods. Once you have sold your goods, make sure you pack them well and think about using printed labels to ensure that your parcel gets to the right place – especially if you are selling internationally.

Donate

Charity shops are always looking for clothing donations and there are things like Salvation Army bins all over the country where you can drop off your unwanted clothes.

Recycle

There are a number of recycling schemes for clothes that will allow you to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. Marks and Spencer have also just teamed up with Oxfam to pioneer a recycling scheme on the high street, making it even easier to recycle your clothes.

How you accessorise can make all the difference to your outfit. Jewellery in particular can add that extra special touch, whether you’re in the office, out on the town or dining in – having the right piece of jewellery can accentuate your best features and add atouch of glamour to your clothes.

Buying jewellery can be expensive though, and sometimes it’s difficult to find that unique little piece that will set your outfit off beautifully. Vintage stores and charity shops are a good place to start when looking for a piece of jewellery that will give your outfit the wow factor. Here, you are far more likely to find one-of-a-kind pieces that will compliment your getup, and although it may take a little bit of extra searching to find high quality items, it will be worth it in the long run.

If the thought of trawling through shops for hours on end sounds like your idea of hell, then you could think about making your own. There are tonnes of shops online and on your high street where you can buy beads, chains and clasps, and can provide you with everything you need to make your own vintage inspired accessories. There are also lots of how-to blogs and info sites that will help guide you through the process, leaving you with something totally unique and one hundred per cent you.

If you’re not feeling crafty, then sites like Etsy and Ebay are great for finding custom jewellery makers and individual pieces at decent prices. There are also some services that will make jewellery according to your own specification for a little extra money.

Parties that specialise in wholesale costume jewellery are also good to look out for. Although pieces are unlikely to be unique, you will be more likely to get a good quality piece of jewellery for a bargain price. These kinds of parties have seen a rise in popularity recently, and you’re more likely to get a good deal because overheads like shop premises and staff wages are cut out.

The popularity and the versatility of the little black dress is famously known and has been for decades within the industry. The origins of the fashion icon is attributed to the fashion giant Chanel and their eponymous designer Coco Chanel in the 1920s, meaning that the little black dress, or LBD as it is often abbreviated, is relatively close to being a hundred years old. No other style of women’s fashion has had such staying power and it would take a truly remarkable revolution to dethrone this titan of the industry, but there could be a potential contender.

The wrap dress is turning heads

The style that has been turning many heads of the fashion world in recent years is the wrap dress. Popularised significantly by Kate Middleton, the various styles of tie in the middle wrap dresses are enabling women of all sizes and ages to look and feel gorgeous in their clothes. The style suits all body shapes and accentuates a beautiful curvy figure with a swooping neck and a neat tie that gives wearers a real waistline.

The incredible popularity of the wrap dress in recent years could be looking to rival the LBD, after all, the essence of both of the styles is about wonderful versatility that they offer. The accompaniment of some basic accessories can transform these dresses into an entirely new outfit with relative ease. And their versatility is two fold because they are appropriate for almost any occasion as they border the line between smart and casual; again depending on the accessories they can be altered to fit the tone of the event.

Arguably the most attention winning model of this new style is the black wrap dress; combining all of the positive elements of the LBD with the growing new trend and the figure forming advantages of the wrap dress. This dress is popular at the moment and infinitely useful and adaptable, however, the true test of the wrap dress will be in staying power. When your competition is an icon of nearly 90 years old, it can be difficult to prove that the wrap dress is very definitely the new wave for the fashion industry.

Popular in America for decades, the school prom is steadily gaining more and more popularity in the UK. Now, one of the most important nights of a young girl’s life is the night of her prom, when she gets to say goodbye to her friends and her childhood and celebrate in style.

Use your prom to look like a princess!

When shopping for prom dresses, bridal shops are always a good place to start. Bridesmaid dresses are a very popular choice amongst girls looking for something beautifully elegant and refined to wear for their special evening. Rose Fahey, who sells Bridesmaid dresses in Reading says, “I’ve seen a massive rise in young girls coming to us for prom dresses in the last few years. It really is important for them – I think that they really want to leave a lasting impression on their school friends. It’s a landmark time for them, so they want to mark it properly. I think that looking sophisticated properly marks the transition into adulthood”

The great thing about shopping at a bridal wear shop is that you can get the dress fitted and have proper, expert advice, although beware – this will not be good for your wallet!

If this all sounds a little bit out of your price-range, then there are loads of boutiques and stores on your high street (not to mention the internet) that can offer you stylish choices at a price that suits every pocket. If you’re worried that the dress might not be unique if bought at a chain store then you can customise it with jewellery and other accessories. Try your local craft store for ideas!

Check out vintage stores too for something totally unique – you can even try charity shops! If you give yourself enough time and are up for some reparations, then you could end up finding something totally gorgeous and absolutely individual.

If you’re lucky enough to be a dab hand with a sewing machine, you could even have a go at designing and making your own dress, making it something that is totally you. Find a dress pattern that suits you and pick some beautiful fabric and you are sure to wow your friends.

When you are shopping for costumes, either for a theatre production or for a private fancy dress party, it can be very easy to get carried a way and lose track of the rapidly escalating cost of all the little pieces that make the costume as good as it is. On top of the cost of the actual clothes themselves all of the accessories soon mount up, but it is these accessories that can sometimes become your favourite part of a costume or character.

In many acting circles they will talk about finding your character in an item. An actor could feel completely uninspired until they put on a certain pair of sunglasses and suddenly the character comes alive for them because of it.

Or if you are heading to a costume party it can be these small pieces and attention to detail that makes your costume the best there. So to stay on top of this cost it can be very useful to look towards wholesale costume jewellery rather than buying from the same place that you would get your personal jewellery. You can often find a great selection of costume jewellery that has more variety than most other locations for buying standard jewellery.

A company such as the RSC or any major professional production can afford to channel money into costumes that are authentic, detailed and tailor fit. But whilst you are waiting to get to that level, wholesale costume jewellery can give you a massive selection of great additions to any costume often for as little as 99p per item.

Sumptuous, elegant and vibrant, Indian bridal wear is not only beautifully opulent, but comes from long standing and time-honoured traditions. Saris, the most popular form of bridal wear are thought to have been popular amongst Indian brides since as early as 1,000 BC and Lenhga Choli was introduced during the height of the Mughal Empire. These wonderful costumes have evolved and developed over the centuries by skilled craftsmen and have, in more recent years, been the beau of many a world-renowned fashion designer.

Popularised in part by the increasing popularity of Bollywood in the UK, traditional Indian wear has also become a favourite of the Western fashion world. There are many different types of bridal wear, coming from different regions and varying in material and detail.

Banarasi Saris are traditionally thought to be some of the finest Saris in India. Produced in Varanasi, Banarasi Saris are notorious for their use of gold and silver brocade as well as their highly detailed embroidery and fine silk. They tend to be fairly heavy, use Mughal inspired designs like floral motifs and can take up to a whopping six months to complete.

Kanchi saris are renowned for their fine silk. Produced in Kanchipuram, around 50,000 of the city’s inhabitants are involved in the hand loom industry. These hand woven saris are well-sought after due to their fine craftsmanship and material quality.

Mysore silk saris, characterised by their richness come in a variety of different colour combinations and a dazzling array of prints. These saris are traditionally worn by South-Indian brides.

Kashmiri saris are characterised by their amazing elegance, it’s opulent, woven embroidery and its easy portrayal of beauty and gracefulness. These are particularly popular amongst the Marwaai community.

Over the years, traditional Indian bridal wear has developed to become lighter and easier to wear, and although the style of embroidery and colour has changed little, fabric is now much sleeker.

Brigette Duval’s show at Devon House was a sensuous delight with a colour palette to blow the top off even the most delicious hues of recent years.

With all those colours and vibrant textures, one would have thought that anything extra was like double-icing the vol-au-vents but Duval obviously didn’t think so. For every nuance of style: curvy crinolines, ready to take-off, flimsy braces over pastel pencil skirts, black net stockings, versions of jazzy hair worn long; everything, in fact, had to have a punchy finish to wow and ooh the celebrity-studded attendees.

When the final climax was reached, a cover version of an old Beatles song had Richard J.Gervaise and Luvi Tien humming away in the front row of the bluey-mauve chairs and Indira Hanshmi, smoulderingly away wickedly as usual, looking simply divine in her bling studded sari. Her devotees fluttered around her wearing what appeared to be a combination of lotus petals and candelabras, but it had the effect of drawing all eyes towards her, which seemed to be the intended effect.

No doubt that finale was supposed to provide a gigantic atmospheric smoke-filled cloud with an accompanying explosive bang but in the end, when it came, the terrifying noise frightened the life out of everyone, not least, the scantily clad ladies on stage in their black and white bodysuits. No one, thank heavens, was badly damaged but one of the models, I think it was Lisa Gregory, landed in the most fortuitous of laps. Rip Parsons, a usually shy baseball player visiting the Devon from his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, made his best catch of the year and it took being knocked over by a tangle of interlocked limbs to knock some sort of expression onto Larissa Sadusana’s usually immobile face. The flamboyantly decorated Conference Hall was otherwise left undisturbed.
